ST. JOSEPH, Mo – Missouri Western soccer plays its last game Friday night in Joplin, Mo. The Griffons take on Missouri Southern with a start time set for 7 p.m.
An injury-plagued year for the Griffons started when they lost their top two scoring threats.
Katie Kempf (four goals in 2012) and
Tara Russell (four goals in 2013) both went down with ACL injuries ending their seasons prematurely.
With that, the Griffons have had a tough season, going 2-13-2.
Ashley Juravich has started all 17 games and has played well. The senior, who wraps up her career Friday night, has scored three goals for the Griffons this season. Sophomore
Drew Mantlo scored her first career goal last Saturday afternoon against Southwest Baptist.
About Southern: The Lions are currently 10
th in the conference, and if they win their next two games they can steal an MIAA post-season berth. If the Griffons knock off the Lions Friday night, it will all but end their chances.
Southern is coming off a 6-1 loss to Emporia State last Sunday. Before that, the Lions lost to Washburn 2-0. After starting out the conference schedule 2-1-3, they have lost three straight MIAA games.
Two players, junior Katelyn Roberson and senior Dana Wilhelm, have scored three goals this season to lead the Lions.
Goalkeepers Beth Hammons and Abby Risner have split time, with Hammons going 2-3-3 and Risner having a 1-4-1 record. Leading the team with five assists is sophomore Karely Thomas.
Last Year's Matchup: 2012 also ended against Missouri Southern, and it was one of the most memorable games in Griffon's history.

Abby Widrig ended her career in style getting the game-winning goal with one minute left in the first overtime giving Missouri Western the 1-0 win. It was the Griffons all-time scoring leader's 13th goal of her career. The goal came 20-yards out from the left side of the net.
