TOPEKA, Kan. - The Missouri Western volleyball split a pair of matches on the first day of the Washburn Crossover Tournament in Topeka, Kan. The Griffons fell in the first match 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-21) against Harding University before defeating Southern Nazarene 3-1 (25-19, 17-25, 25-14, 25-18). The Griffons improve to 10-8 on the season.
In the first match the Griffons were led by
Amanda Boender with 10 kills.
Stephanie Hattey had 22 set assists and eight digs while
Brooke Cousino led the way defensively with 10 digs.
Harding was led by Mollie Arnold with 19 kills while Amber Schinzing had 40 set assists. Harding improves to 13-5 with the victory.
In set two against Southern Nazrene the two teams split the first two sets before the Griffons dominated the last two taking the victory.
Once again the Griffons were led by Boender as she had 13 kills.
Jessie Thorup and
Sarah Faubel had 11 and 10 kills respectively while Hattey finished with 32 set assists. Cousino had her best game for the Griffons with 20 digs while Lyman had 13.
Southern Nazarene was led by Natalia Oliveira had 14 kills and 17 digs. Nazarene falls to 8-10 with the loss.
The Griffons close out the final day of the tournament with games against Southeastern Oklahoma State and East Central University on Saturday, October 6. Game times are set for 9:00 am and 1:30 pm respectively.
