GRIFFON VOLLEYBALL TAKES OPENING MATCH OF CLASSIC

DENTON, Texas – The Missouri Western volleyball team won their opening match of the 2011 Holiday Inn Express & Suites Classic against Texas A&M International by a score of 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-23). The classic is being hosted by Texas Woman's University in Denton, Texas. Western was led by Tahler Johnston with 14 kill as the Griffons sit at 6-6 on the season.

Missouri Western ended set one on an 11-4 run claiming the set 25-18 after a Daria Winckler service error. Western used a 5-0 run which was sparked by the serving of Torey Lyman and two kills by Shelby Corkill giving them some breathing room in the first set.

Western continued the momentum early in set to scoring eight of the first nine points. The Dust Devils stormed back cutting the Griffon lead to two at 13-11 and 14-12. Western responded going on a 4-1 run pushing its lead to 18-13 after two attack errors by Alex Ciszek. Once again the Dust Devil's came back cutting Weestern's lead to one (19-18) after a Lyman attack error. The rest of the match would be close but two Sarah Faubel services aces helped the Griffons to the 25-23 set two victory and most importantly a 2-0 lead in the match.

The first half of set three would be all Texas A&M International as they jumped out to a 13-7 lead. Western regrouped going on a 9-2 run claiming its first lead of the set at 16-15. The two teams went back and forth the rest of the way but a Stephanie Hattie kill and an attack error by Ciszek gave western the 25-23 victory and the 3-0 match victory.

The Griffons finished hitting .125 with 39 kills. Meredith McCormick had nine kills while Corkill pitched in seven. Hattey finished with 34 of the Griffons 37 set assists and also had 10 digs. Corkill finished with 12 digs while Johnston had 10. Faubel and Lyman each had three of the Griffons 10 services aces.

The Dust Devils fall to 7-10 on the season. They finished with 30 kill as Miranda Pratt let the charge with eight. Winckler had 26 set assists while Desiree Ortiz had 16 digs.

Western continues play in the classic this evening at 7:00 pm against Southeastern Oklahoma State University.
