GRIFFON VOLLEYBALL OPENS UP MIAA AND HOME SCHEDULE WITH TIGERS

Last week Western competed in the UN-Kearney Fall Classic. They emerged with a 2-2 record with wins over Black Hills State University and Chadron State and losses to Wayne State College and host UN-Kearney. The Griffons look to build on their success from the UN-Kearney Fall Classic as they open their home and MIAA seasons against Fort Hays State at the MWSU Fieldhouse. Western looks to continue their success against the Tigers and open the MIAA season on a high note.

About the Tigers:
The Tigers return 7 players from a season where they went 7-25 and finished 0-20 in the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association. They have 10 incoming freshman and five junior transfers as well. Last week the Tigers participated in the Southwest Baptist Purple Bash defeating both Central Oklahoma and Southern Arkansas.

Series history with the Tigers:
The Griffons and the Tigers have met thirty seven times in series history with Western leading the series 26-11. Western won the last meeting between the teams in 2010 by a score of 3-1. The most recent Fort Hays State victory in the series was October 21, 2009.

About the coach:
Kurt Kohler is entering his third season as head volleyball coach at Fort Hays State University in 2011. His youthful 2010 squad, which featured 14 freshman, struggled in the MIAA conference, but made it through non-conference play at 7-5, including a 4-0 weekend at the Texas-Permian Basin Tournament. Kohler came to Fort Hays State from Barton (Kan.) Community College, where he coached volleyball during the 2005-06 season. During that season at Barton, Kohler led the Cougars to a 36-11 overall record and a national ranking for most of the season. Barton finished the season ranked 14th in the nation. Kohler gained his first experience at the NCAA Division II level at Missouri Western State University, where he served as Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator in 2004.
