Biography

Outlook: He has good character, on and off the floor...will battle for a starting spot this season...will be looked upon for leadership on and off the floor.

2012-2013: Played in all 27 games with 12 starts...took over for Adarius Fulton after he was injured as the starting point guard...went 67-for-174 from the field, averaging 38.5 percent...averaged 6.9 points per game...recorded 52 assists and 38 steals on the year...scored a season-high 18 points against Washburn on the road to upset the No. 17 ranked Ichabods.

2011-2012: Played in 26 games with nine starts...averaged 17.9 minutes per game averaging 5.5 points and 1.6 rebounds per game...scored in double figures four times which includes a career high of 17 on January 28, 2012 against Washburn...dished out a career high five assists on November 26, 2011 against St. Mary’s (Texas)...made 37.3-percent (47-126) of his field goals, 34.6-percent (28-81) of his three point attempts and 75.9-percent (22-of-29) of his free throw attempts.

High School: Mells, a 5-foot-10 point guard, played his high school basketball at Grandview Park Baptist High School in Des Moines, Iowa...Mells was on the varsity since his freshman season...played under Chris Murphy finishing his career with over 1,000 points...as a senior he averaged 20.5 points per game, 7.1 assists per game, 3.8 steals per game and 5.0 rebounds per game...guided his team to the 2010 Class 1A District Championship...was a 1st Team All-State Selection by the Des Moines Register and the Iowa Sports Connection...a three time 1st Team Heart of Iowa Conference selection (2009, 2010 & 2011) as well as being named Team MVP twice (2010 & 2011). Mells is involved in numerous school and community activities such as the year book staff (2009 & 2010), an All-Male Christian club called Sons of Thunder (2010), an active youth ministry leader at Daybrak Family Worship Center (2005-present), counselor for Science Center of Iowa (summer of 2007) and is the founder of Boys, Books and Basketball Summer Reading Club for boys 3rd-7th grade (2008-2010)...has played for three AAU basketball teams which include Hoop School (2008), Crossover Institute (2009) and Kingdom Hoops (2010)...has earned awards such as Men of Achievement from Omega Psi Phi fraternity in 2007 and the Triple A (Academics/Athletics/Achievement) Award from National Black Child Development Institute in 2010...was also an All-American Scholar of the United States Achievement Academy in 2010.
