Longtime Griffon Men's Basketball team manager turned graduate assistant Weston Smith was hired as the program's second current full-time assistant coach before the 2022-23 season.

During that season Smith helped oversee a 14-16 overall season with a 9-13 record in the MIAA. This led their squad to a conference tournament appearance with three players making the All-MIAA selections.

Smith was the team's manager from fall 2016 to spring 2020 before transitioning to a GA role in the fall of 2020.

"I am beyond thrilled to formally announce the promotion of Weston Smith to assistant coach," Martin said. "There is no one who represents the core values of our program more than Weston. He has humbly and honorably risen through the ranks here at Missouri Western from student manager, graduate assistant and now assistant coach. His loyalty to our players, this program and Missouri Western as a whole is second to none. Coach Smith has a high acumen for the game and is a rising superstar in the realm of next gen analytics in our profession."

Smith stays engrained in St. Joseph's basketball scene, a journey that started at Bishop LeBlond where he graduated as a Golden Eagle in 2016.

"The FLOW has truly provided me an amazing opportunity to keep serving the Griffons," Smith said. "I'm incredibly thankful and humbled that Coach Martin would allow me the chance to remain a part of a program, department and community that means so much to me. Coach Martin has been incredible to learn from, and his ability to reach and serve student athletes is second to none. I'm ecstatic to continue with a team that has a standard of commitment, resiliency and transparency. The mission of this team has always been bigger than basketball, but I believe that this upcoming season has the potential to be monumental on and off the court for everyone involved."
