Rhesa Sumrell Legacy Scholarship

Rhesa Sumrell was Missouri Western's first head volleyball, women's basketball and softball coach in school history. She's still the all-time winningest coach in Griffon Volleyball history with a record of 494-167 and four CSIC championships. Sumrell also led MoWest softball to 171 wins in her tenure, including an NAIA national title in 1982. She's now enshrined into seven Halls of Fame, including MoWest (1990), the NAIA, the MIAA (2014) and now the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame (2025).

Rhesa's legacy was not just in the wins and championships for our women's programs, but also in the countless lives she impacted in a positive way throughout her career as a Griffon. The 50th Anniversary of Women's Athletics Committee is leading the efforts to establish an endowed scholarship in Rhesa's honor.

We invite you to join us in establishing this scholarship. If you have any questions regarding the scholarship, please contact Deputy Director of Athletics and Senior Woman Administrator Theresa Grosbach at tgrosbach@missouriwestern.edu or (816) 271-4258.
