WICHITA, Kan. – Griffon Softball (24-11, 5-7 MIAA) fell at Newman Thursday in a doubleheader, dropping the first game 8-5 and the second 12-6 at the NU Softball Field in Wichita, Kansas.
Game 1: Newman 8 MWSU 5
Newman led 5-0 after the fourth, but MoWest managed to tie the game 5-5 in the sixth with with a two-run homer to center field in the sixth by
Sydney Young.
The Jets (7-27, 2-8 MIAA), however, responded with a go-ahead three-run bomb in the bottom of the sixth to lead 8-5.
The Griffs had the tying run at the plate in the seventh, but a strikeout ended the threat.
Torie Sandoval (7-4) made the start and took the loss, tossing the first 2.1 innings. She was charged with four earned runs on four hits. She struck out two and walked two.
Harley Pruetting pitched the last 3.2 innings in relief, striking out three and walking one. She was charged with three earned runs on seven hits.
Game 2: Newman 12 MWSU 6
Newman got off to another big start, leading 7-1 after the second. MoWest scored two in the fifth and three in the sixth, but the Jets had the answer each time, scoring three in the fifth and two in the sixth.
MoWest was put down in order in the seventh to slam the door.
Sophie Johnson and
Myah Dwyer each had three hits.
Ashlyn Finarty had a solo home run.
Aubrey Dare (10-8) made the start and took the loss, tossing the first 1.1 innings, striking out one and walking four. She was tagged with seven earned runs on six hits.
