Baseball dominates Newman 15-1 behind Cantu’s two home runs

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Griffon Baseball (13-16, 8-10 MIAA) used a big offensive day and strong pitching to roll past Newman (4-25, 2-17 MIAA), 15-1, on Friday at Griffon Baseball Field.

MoWest got going early as Miguel Cantu opened the scoring with a solo home run in the first inning. Seth Winkler followed with a solo shot in the second to make it 2-0.

The Griffons broke the game open in the third. Cantu delivered a two-run double to bring home Jordan Austin and Micah Kobuszewski, and David De Hoyos added an RBI single to extend the lead to 5-0.

Newman scored its only run in the fourth, but MoWest answered right back. Carson Shear came home on a wild pitch before Cantu crushed his second home run of the game, a three-run shot to push the lead to 9-1.

The Griffons kept adding on late. Dylan Coty scored on a wild pitch in the fifth, and MoWest exploded for five runs in the sixth. Winkler drove in a run on a sacrifice, Luke Shannahan added an RBI single, and Coty highlighted the inning with a two-run triple as the Griffons pulled away 15-1.

On the mound, Cam Saleh earned the win, tossing 5.0 innings while allowing just one run (0 earned) on three hits with five strikeouts and three walks. Lawson Minshew and Jake Pemble each worked a scoreless inning in relief to close it out, combining to allow no hits with one strikeout.

MoWest controlled the game throughout, scoring in six different innings while limiting Newman to just one run.

What's Next
The Griffons continue the series against Newman on Saturday with first pitch set for 3 p.m. at Griffon Baseball Field.
