ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Griffon Lacrosse (4-1) won its home opener Sunday afternoon inside the Griffon Indoor Sports Complex, earning a 15-7 victory over Concordia–St. Paul (2-4).
Concordia–St. Paul opened the scoring with a man-up goal at the 10:16 mark of the first quarter, but
Caetryn Gilreath quickly answered with an unassisted strike to even the match at 1-1.
From there, MWSU seized control.
Maleah Sosa sparked a five-goal run, scoring twice once off an assist from
Jessica Brook and again on a feed from
Madi Brinkman. Brinkman added an unassisted goal of her own,
Brooke Tjernlund converted on a pass from Brook, and
Madi Brinkman capped the surge as the Griffons built a commanding 5-1 advantage after the opening period.
The Griffons continued to apply pressure in the second quarter.
Brinley Willenbrock found the net early before Gilreath scored twice in the final 2:32, giving MWSU a 10-4 lead at halftime.
Concordia–St. Paul attempted to rally in the second half, scoring twice in the third quarter, but Brinkman recorded a man-up goal at the 13:06 mark to keep momentum on the Griffons' side as MWSU carried an 11-7 edge into the fourth.
In the final period, Willenbrock, Gilreath,
Maddie Chidester (assisted by
Brittan Gulick), and
Ryann Durrett (assisted by Brook) each added goals to secure the 15-7 victory.
MWSU controlled possession throughout the afternoon, winning the draw battle 18-6. The Griffons claimed a 4-3 edge in the first quarter before dominating the second (8-0) and fourth (5-1) periods to maintain momentum and limit Concordia–St. Paul's opportunities.
