SAN ANGELO, Texas – Griffon Softball (6–0) remained unbeaten on day one of the George and Ola McCorkle Challenge, opening the weekend with a pair of victories Friday at Mayer Softball Field.
MWSU began the day with a 4–1 win over Texas A&M International before closing the afternoon with a statement 2–0 shutout of tournament host #13 Angelo State.
Game 1: MoWest 4, Texas A&M International 1
The Dustdevils scored first in the top of the first inning with an RBI home run to left field to grab an early 1–0 lead. MWSU responded in the bottom of the second as Rachel Cain ripped an RBI single down the left-field line to even the game at 1-1 scoring Sydney Young.
MoWest took the lead in the sixth inning when Sophie Johnson doubled to drive in a run, bringing Brooklynn Clark home for a 2–1 advantage. The Griffons added insurance in the seventh as Myah Dwyer crushed a two-run homer to left-center, scoring Kalee Higdon and extending the lead to 4–1.
On the mound, Torie Sandoval earned the win to improve to 2–0 on the season. Sandoval went the distance, allowing just one run on two hits while striking out five across seven innings. She issued two walks and threw 93 pitches in the complete-game effort.
Game 2: MoWest 2, #13 Angelo State 0
MoWest earned a statement 2–0 shutout over tournament host No. 13 Angelo State, as Ashlyn Finarty broke a scoreless tie with a two-run home run in the seventh inning and pitched 6.1 scoreless innings, striking out five while throwing 101 pitches, before Harley Pruetting closed out the final 0.2 innings, striking out one on nine pitches to earn the save and seal the huge ranked win.

MWSU returns to action Saturday for day two of the George and Ola McCorkle Challenge, facing the same opponents at Mayer Softball Field. First pitch is set for 11:00 a.m. against Texas A&M International, followed by a 1:15 p.m. matchup with No. 13 Angelo State.
