WICHITA, Ks. – It took it a late surge, individual heroics and final second ice water. And that was all just to force overtime.
The MoWest women's basketball team erased a 9-point fourth quarter deficit to gut out a 94-88 double overtime win at Newman Saturday in the regular season finale for both teams.
Mia Morel scored 32 of her game-high 34 points after halftime, including a 16-point 4
th quarter explosion, helping the Griffons (13-15, 9-10 MIAA) to erase a 9-point deficit with seven minutes remaining. With the Griffons down three in the final seconds, Morel's game-tying three pointer, fell short, but fellow senior
Lindsey Kelderman wound up with the offensive rebound and threw up a prayer just before the buzzer. It didn't fall, but Kelderman was fouled on the shot and sunk all three free throws with 1.6 seconds remaining to send the game to overtime.
The Jets (8-20, 2-17 MIAA) still had some magic of their own, erasing 5-point Griffon lead in the extra period's final 1:10 to tie the game at 86 and force a second OT period.
The Griffons opened the 2
nd overtime on a 6-0 run and never looked back to avoid the upset and earn their 5
thstraight victory to end the 2025-26 regular aseason.
Morel tied a school record with eight three pointers (8-18) and finished with 11 rebounds and 4 assists to along with her 34 points. Ana Oliviera Dias added 12 pints, 11 assists 8 rebounds and 6 assists in the effort.
Nakiya Harris had 22 points and 7 rebounds.
The Griffons, who entered February with a record of 6-14 and a 2-9 conference mark, saved their best basketball for this stretch run, winning 7 of 8 and entering next week's MIAA Tournament having won five straight.
