DENVER, Colo. – Griffon Baseball (0-2) opened the 2026 season with a doubleheader on Saturday against Metro State-Denver on Saturday at The Assembly Athletic Complex. The Roadrunners took both games from the Griffons, winning the first 13-11 and the second 11-8.
Game 1: MSU-Denver 13 MWSU 11
MoWest got the bats going early, leading 4-0 in the top of the second, but MSU-Denver quickly tied it at 4-4 with four runs in the bottom of the frame.
MoWest then led 7-5 in the fifth, thanks to a two-run homer by
Micah Kobuszewski. The lead grew to 10-5 in the top of the sixth with three runs across. Kobuszewski drove in one of those runs on an RBI double.
The Roadrunners responded, scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth, and then taking the lead at 11-10 with two more runs in the seventh. The Griffons tied it at 11-11 in the eighth with an RBI single from
Luke Shannahan.
MSU-Denver took the lead for good with two runs scored in the bottom of the eighth. The Griffs were then struck out in order in the top of the ninth to end the game.
The Griffs had 18 hits and were error-free in the field. Six Griffon batters had multiple hits.
Luke Parmentier,
Miguel Cantu and Kobuszewski each had three base knocks. Kobuszewski finished with four RBIs. Cantu finished with a single-shot home run.
On the mound,
Lawson Minshew (0-1) took the loss, as he tossed the final 1.1 innings, giving up two earned runs.
Jackson Parrill made the start, going 3.2 innings, surrendering six hits and five earned runs. He struck out three, walked four and hit two batters.
Game 2: MSU-Denver 11 MWSU 8
The Griffons scored the first run in the top half of the first inning, but then absorbed a seven-run frame from the Roadrunners in the bottom half, making it 7-1 entering the second.
MoWest trailed 10-3 after three and then 11-5 entering the ninth. The Griffs cut into the deficit with three runs across in the top of the ninth inning, but the rally was stopped short with a runner stranded on base.
The Griffs finished with 12 hits, but committed four errors in the field.
David De Hoyos went 3-for-4 with a run scored and four RBIs.
Jordan Austin and
Miguel Cantu each had a pair of hits, while
Luke Parmentier went yard.
Noah Turner (0-1) made the start and took the loss, tossing 1.2 innings and surrendering four earned runs. He struck out two and walked one.
Ben Ayala threw the last 5.2 innings for MoWest, and struck out for while walking just one and allowing just one earned run.
