ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Griffon Football (1-1) dominated the first half and played strong defense throughout in a 27-10 home opening win over Missouri S&T on Saturday night at Spratt Stadium.
The Griffons ended the first half with four consecutive scoring drives and limited the Miners (2-1) to just 66 yards through the first two quarters, lifting MoWest to a 24-0 halftime lead.
MoWest added to its total in the 4
th quarter with a 37-yard field goal from
Spencer Sprenger. S&T, however, fought hard late, scoring all of their points in the last 4:15 of the contest.
Still, the Griffons were dominant on defense throughout, holding S&T to just 34 rushing yards on 30 attempts. The Miners were held to just 212 total yards on 63 snaps.
Kamron Lee and
Desmond Green each had interceptions for MoWest as well.
Kienen Gaskin and
Drew Scott each led the defense with six total tackles.
Broc Worcester recorded a solo sack – the first of his career.
Offensively, quarterback
Kane Donovan was sound for MoWest, completing 20-of-33 passes for a career-high 233 yards and a career-high three touchdown passes. He also rushed for 24 yards.
Donovan's touchdown passes were to
Isaac Khattab,
Bryce Page and
Damir Abdullah. Those were the first collegiate touchdown grabs for each of those three players.
Bryce Marcus III had a team-best four grabs for 54 yards. Abdullah had a team-high 57 yards on three total catches.
MoWest also ran the ball effectively, collecting 211 yards on 30 attempts.
Marrell Fountain led the team in rushing for the second straight week, going 65 yards on five carries.
MoWest stays at home next Saturday, September 20 to open MIAA play against Central Missouri (0-2). Kickoff in that game is set for 6 p.m. and will be broadcast on the Griffon Sports Network (GoGriffons.com/listen, Varsity Network App) and on the MIAA Network.
