Rader tosses no-hitter, softball shuts out UNK in MIAA tournament

Griffons are onto the quarterfinals to face Pittsburg State Thursday.

HAYS, Kan. – Sydney Rader (21-9) tossed her second career no-hitter and No. 7 seed Missouri Western softball (32-20) scored an 8-0 win in six innings over No. 10 seed Nebraska-Kearney in the first round of the MIAA softball tournament at Fleharty Family Field in Hays Wednesday.

Rader's only previous no-hitter was in her first career start against Northern State on Feb. 27, 2021.

In what was now her 103rd career start (one shy of tying for third most in program history), Rader kept the Lopers hitless through six innings, striking out five. She also walked five batters, throwing 92 pitches in all.

The victory marked Rader's 23rd career shutout – the second most in program history. She's earned an MIAA-leading nine shutouts this season.

Offensively, the Griffons scored their first run in the second and continued peppering them on from there, tallying 11 hits in all, including five doubles.

Sydney Young was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. She doubled twice. Taylor Jones, Mackenzie DeVine and Ayva McComas each had a pair of hits in the win. Kalee Higdon scored a pair of runs.

The Griffons also benefited from a pair of UNK errors. Missouri Western was error free Wednesday.

Missouri Western advances to the quarterfinals to face No. 2 seed Pittsburg State (37-13). First pitch on Thursday is set for 6:30 p.m.
