Softball sweeps Missouri S&T Wednesday

Griffons extend win streak to five games.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Missouri Western softball (26-19, 11-11 MIAA) notched a doubleheader sweep against Missouri S&T Wednesday, winning 2-0 in the first game and 6-5 in eight innings in the second.

The Griffons extend their current winning streak to five games, and they pick up their first non-conference doubleheader sweep this season.

Missouri Western stays home for more non-conference action this Saturday against Upper Iowa. First pitch in those games is set for 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Game 1: Missouri Western 2 Missouri S&T 0
Sydney Rader (17-9) and the Griffon defense held the Miners to just two hits in the game.

Rader was consistent throughout in the circle, picking up her seventh shutout of the season and striking out six batters.

Sienna Reed had a sac fly in the fifth and Myah Dwyer an RBI single in the sixth to get the Griffs on the board.

Game 2: Missouri Western 6 Missouri S&T 5 (8 innings)
Each team scored one run in the third. Sydney Young had a sac fly to score Sienna Reed, tying the game 1-1.

Western jumped in front in the fifth with two runs in the frame. Young came through with a two-run RBI double to put the Griffs in front at 3-1.

The Griffs added another in the sixth with Ella Fitzpatrick scoring on a fielding error.

S&T tied it at 4-4 with three runs in the top of the seventh, and then the Miners took a 5-4 lead to the bottom of the eighth.

Mackenzie DeVine started the eighth as the international tiebreaker at second base. She was brought home on an RBI single by Reed.

With the bases loaded and two gone, Taylor Jones sent a game-winning RBI single up the middle, scoring Lauren Newlin from third.

Young went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Reed was 2-for-2, scoring a pair of runs. Harley Pruetting (6-5) picked up the win, tossing the last four innings in relief. She struck out three and walked two, allowing three earned runs.

Missouri Western is now 3-0 in extra inning games this season.
