ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - Missouri Western softball (22-19, 9-11 MIAA) split a doubleheader against Washburn Friday, dropping the first game 2-0, but bouncing back for a 5-4 win in the second at the MWSU Spring Sports Complex.
Missouri Western stays home Saturday to host Emporia State. Those games are set to start at 12 and 2 p.m. Both will be broadcast on the Griffon Sports Network (Varsity Network App, GoGriffons.com/listen) and available to stream on the MIAA Network as well.
Game 1: Washburn 2 Missouri Western 0
Missouri Western never really got going offensively, held to just four total hits in the game. Alexis Tanguma kept the Griffs in check, pitching a complete game shutout and striking out one.
Sydney Rader (15-9) went the complete game, striking out four and walking two. She allowed seven hits, but just one earned run.
Game 2: Missouri Western 5 Washburn 4
Washburn jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third inning, but Missouri Western grabbed the lead with four runs in the bottom of the fourth, sparked by a three-run RBI double from
Kennedy Preston.
Western added one more run in the fifth inning with an RBI triple from
Sydney Young. Young went 2-for-3 in the game.
Washburn got a run back in the sixth inning.
Ashlyn Finarty relieved starter
Harley Pruetting in the sixth, and went the last 1.2 innings to earn her first career save.
Finarty struck out two of her six faced, giving Missouri Western its first save as a team this season.
