ST. JOSEPH, Mo. –
Carson Shear's RBI single scored
Easton O'Keefe from third base and Missouri Western baseball (8-20, 6-12 MIAA) edged Emporia State, 5-4, in 10 innings at the MWSU Spring Sports Complex Tuesday.
The Griffons, now winners of three straight and five of their last six, have evened the season series with ESU. Western will play at Emporia for the series rubber match on April 15.
Missouri Western scored first in the bottom of the third with an RBI groundout by
Quinton Robertson. The Griffs put up two more in the fourth on RBI singles from
Kaden Doan and
Jett Grossart to go up 3-2.
Frank Gall stole home in the sixth to give MWSU a 4-2 lead.
Emporia State tied it at 4-4 with two runs in the top of the seventh.
After a scoreless eighth and ninth, O'Keefe reached first base on a throwing error in the 10th and advanced to second on an ensuing throw.
After Grossart was intentionally walked, Shear snuck a grounder between second and third, allowing O'Keefe to score the winning run.
Shear, Grossart, Doan and Gall each had two hits in the win. Gall scored two runs and stole three bases. The Griffons stole eight bases in all – the second most in a single game this season.
Jayson Shorb (2-2) picked up the win, pitching the last three innings, allowing just two hits and striking out one.
Missouri Western stays home to open a weekend series with Missouri Southern. First pitch on Friday is set for 6 p.m.
