TOPEKA, Kan. - Missouri Western baseball (5-20, 4-12 MIAA) scored 18 runs on 17 hits, including a pair of home runs, but the Griffons lost in a 19-18 shootout at Washburn Sunday in a series finale at Falley Field.
Missouri Western, who took two out of three games in the weekend series, trailed 12-5 after the third inning, but continued to rally, putting up five runs in the eighth and one more in the ninth.
Washburn pushed across four runs in the seventh, pushing their lead to 19-12, which would be just enough to hold on for the win.
The Griffons had the tying run on third and the lead run at second in the top of the ninth, but a groundout cut the rally short.
Kaden Doan tied a career-high with four hits, as he went 4-for-4 with three runs scored.
Anthony Taggart and
Quinton Robertson each went 3-for-5. Robertson logged a career-best six RBIs, including a three-run bomb in the fifth.
Jackson Bryant scored three runs, including a single-shot dinger in the eighth.
Jett Grossart and
Frank Gall each had a pair of hits and each scored a pair of runs.
Will Kennedy (0-1) was tagged with the loss, tossing one inning of middle relief. He allowed two earned runs and walked a batter.
Gunnar Nartker made the start, lasting 2.2 innings, striking out three, but allowing 11 earned runs on seven hits.
Missouri Western concludes a nine-game road trip on Tuesday with a non-conference game at UMSL. First pitch from St. Louis is set for 3 p.m.
