3WICHITA, Kan. - Missouri Western baseball (3-18, 2-10 MIAA) scored five runs on nine hits, but dropped the decisive game of the series at Newman Sunday, 13-5, at McCarthy Field in Wichita.
Missouri Western scored the first run of the game, thanks to a
Frank Gall sac fly. The Griffons then tied the game 2-2 in the second with another sac fly from
Blake Venneman. The Jets, however, led 8-3 by the start of the fifth inning, putting up four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Newman added two runs in the sixth and three more in the eighth.
Quinn Gundelfinger and
Diego Rodriguez each went 2-for-4 at the plate for the Griffons.
Quinton Robertson had a solo shot home run in the top of the fourth, which made it a 4-3 ballgame at that point.
Gunnar Nartker (0-2) made the start on the mound for Missouri Western and took the loss, going three innings and surrendering four earned runs. He struck out one and walked four. Newman benefited from free passes, as seven Griffon pitchers combined to walk 14 batters.
Missouri Western stays on the road Tuesday to face Emporia State for the first game in a three-game season series with the Hornets. First pitch in that game is set for 3 p.m.
