ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - Missouri Western softball (15-8, 4-2 MIAA) earned a split against No. 6 Rogers State Thursday, beating the Hillcats 6-3 in game one and falling in a 1-0 nailbiter in game two at the MWSU Spring Sports Complex.
The Griffons, playing in their first home games of the 2025 seasoin, scored their first win against Rogers State in St. Joseph in program history, and ended a streak of three straight seasons of being swept by the Hillcats in regular season doubleheaders.
Missouri Western stays home on Friday to host Northeastern State (6-16, 0-4 MIAA) at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The games will be broadcast on the Griffon Sports Network (Varsity Network App, GoGriffons.com/listen) and on the MIAA Network.
Game 1: MIssouri Western 6 Rogers State 3
The Griffons dealt the first blow offensively with a three-run RBI double by
Kennedy Preston with bases loaded in the bottom of the second, propelling MWSU to a 3-0 lead.
Rogers State (18-5, 4-2 MIAA) answered with three runs in the top of the third, but Preston and
Kalee Higdon came through for RBI singles in the third to put Western back in front 5-3.
Preston added another to her impressive game, tripling to right field to score
Taylor Jones, making it a 6-3 ballgame after the fifth. Preston went 3-for-3 with a single, double, triple and a career-high 5 RBIs.

Sydney Rader did the rest, holding the Hillcats scoreless over the final four innings. Rader (10-3) went the full game, tossing 112 pitches, striking out seven and walking none.
Game 2: Rogers State 1 Missouri Western 0
The second game hummed along pretty quickly, as both pitchers and defenses were locked in until the bitter end. The Griffons were limited to just two total hits, and were put down in order in innings 2-6.
Rogers State was held to just four hits themselves, but came through to score the go-ahead in the top of the seventh. The Hillcats had runners at first and second base with two outs, and a fielding error at third base allowed Callie Yellin to score.
Missouri Western had them at the corners with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but a groundout and a strikeout ended the threat.
Ashlyn Finarty (2-4) finished with the third complete game of her career, striking out one and walking none. At one point, Finarty and the Griffon defense retired 11 Hillcats in order.
