MONTICELLO, Ark. - Missouri Western baseball (1-6) scored five runs in the top of the first inning, but were held off the board the rest of the way in a 14-5 loss at Arkansas-Monticello on Sunday at Weevils Field at Union Bank Park, securing a sweep for the Boll Weevils.
Monticello (5-1) answered Western's early runs right away with four runs in both the first and second innings, and they tacked on six insurance runs between the fifth to the eighth inning.
The Griffon pitching staff struggled throughout, walking nine batters and hitting six others. The Boll Weevils scored 13 earned runs on 10 hits in all.
Colby Deaver took the loss on the mound, giving up four earned runs in 3.2 innings. He struck out two and walked two others. He also hit three batters. Starting pitcher
Gunnar Nartker was pulled after just 0.1 innings, facing seven batters and surrendering four earned runs and five walks.
Frank Gall and
Jackson Bryant each had a pair of hits to lead the way offensively. Bryant scored and drove in a run. The Griffons had nine hits in all, but stranded seven runners on base.
Missouri Western resumes non-conference play this coming weekend in Joplin, Missouri in the MSSU Lion Classic. The Griffons will first play Truman State on Friday at 4 p.m.
