Softball's fast start not enough to power past Missouri S&T

The Miners scored four unanswered runs to snap Western’s four-game win streak

TOPEKA, Kan. - Missouri Western softball (6-6) faced a setback on the second day of the Washburn Invitational, as they fell to Missouri S&T (1-11) 4-2 on Sunday afternoon at Washburn Rural High School. MWSU had its four-game winning streak snapped against the Miners.

The Griffons started strong with a two-run bomb to center from senior Mackenzie DeVine - her first home run of the season and the 16th of her career. However, the Miners responded with four unanswered runs, highlighted by a solo shot from Taylor Nelson to secure the two-run victory.

Three different pitchers took the mound for Western in this game. Junior right-hander Harley Pruetting (2-3) took the loss after giving up four hits and three earned runs in 3.1 innings of work. Makenzie Garr and Sydney Rader entered from the bullpen to finish the game, combining for a total of four strikeouts.

Missouri Western will conclude the Washburn Invitational tomorrow morning against Wayne State (Neb.) of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC). First pitch from the WU Complex is slated for 10:00 a.m.
