FORT SMITH, Ark. - Missouri Western women's basketball (16-8, 11-5 MIAA) held a lead for nearly 29 minutes and led by as many as eight points, but Arkansas-Fort Smith used a 19-4 run in the closing minutes to win 88-80 at the Stubblefield Center in Fort Smith, Arkansas Thursday.
The Griffons led 76-69 with 4:56 to go. But just 15 seconds later,
Kassandra Caron fouled out, and that's when the run started for UAFS, as the Lions hit seven of their last eight shots from the field and shot 10-of-16 from the field in the fourth quarter.
Missouri Western was just 5-of-18 from the floor in the final period, including 3-of-12 from three.
Alyssa Bonilla led MWSU with 21 points, hitting 4-of-10 from long range. She also led the team in rebounds (6), assists (4) and steals (2). Caron and
Laura Toffali each had 14 points.
Kelsey Johnson ended with a season-high 9 points on a trio of three-pointers.
Matilda Soderlund also scored 9 points on a 3-of-7 effort from long range.
Missouri Western made 12-of-45 (26.7%) from beyond the arc and 28-of-71 (39.4%) from the field. The Griffons were also 12-of-19 (63.2%) from the free throw line.
Anna Trusty led UAFS with a game-high 27 points. The Lions made 29-of-59 (49.2%) from the field and 27-of-33 (81.8%) from the foul line.
