SEARCY, Ark. - Missouri Western baseball (0-2) was swept at Harding in a doubleheader on Saturday, losing 7-4 in game one and 5-4 in game two at Jerry Moore Field in Searcy, Arkansas.
The Griffons will play Harding twice more on Sunday at 1 and 3 p.m.
GAME 1: Harding 7 Missouri Western 4
Missouri Western got down 4-0 after the first two innings before a sac fly by
Quinn Gundelfinger scored
Blake Venneman in the top of the fourth to get the Griffons on the board.
Harding added three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Griffons tried to rally with an RBI single by
Frank Gall in the seventh and then a two-run homer by
Jackson Bryant in the eighth, but the rally came up short.
Rogelio Berumen went 3-for-4 at the plate with a run scored.
The Griffons outhit Harding 11-6, but struck out 11 times. What's more, Harding's pitchers didn't issue any walks or wild pitches.
Venneman scored two runs on a 2-of-4 effort at the plate.
Gunnar Nartker took the loss on the mound, giving up four earned runs on five hits in two innings. He struck out two batters, but hit two others and walked another.
GAME 2: Harding 5 Missouri Western 4 (7 innings)
Missouri Western scored the first run in the top of the second, as Berumen reached home on a passed ball. The Griffons then led 2-0 in the middle of the fourth after Venneman scored on a Gundelfinger sacrifice bunt.
Harding hit back in a big way in the bottom of the fourth, scoring all five of their runs in that frame.
The Griffons scored a single run in both the fifth and seventh innings - both driven in by Gall. He had an RBI single in the fifth and then an RBI groundout in the seventh.
Lynden Bruegman took the loss on the mound, pitching 3.2 innings and allowing five earned runs on five hits. He struck out two and walked three.
Jayson Shorb tossed two strong innings of middle relief, striking out three and walking only one.
