ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - Griffon Women's Basketball (0-2) led by as many as nine points and led for more than 22 minutes, but No. 13 Lubbock Christian scored 50 second half points and forced 20 turnovers in an 82-75 win over the Griffons at Civic Arena in St. Joseph in the D2CCA Tip-off Classic on Sunday.
MoWest started strong, leading 29-20 with 5:38 left in the second quarter and leading 36-32 at halftime.
Things turned in the second half, as Lubbock Christian (2-0) took the lead 45-44 with 4:43 remaining in the third quarter and never trailed again.
Trailing 58-48 at the start of the fourth, MoWest had a strong start to the final frame, trailing only 62-59 with still 5:31 left, but the Chaparrals went on a crucial 9-2 run to push the lead back to 71-61 with 3:13 to play.
Lubbock Christian was 8-for-8 on free throws in the final five minutes and connected on two big three-pointers in that time as well.
Mia Morel led MoWest with a team-best and season-best 19 points and six assists.
Nakiya Harris had 15 points and seven rebounds.
Lindsey Kelderman had 13 points, hitting on 4-of-7 attempts from long range.
LaNicia Parker came off the bench for 10 points and seven boards.
MoWest shot respectably from all areas, hitting 47.3% (26-of-55) from the field, 10-of-27 from three (37%) and 13-of-15 at the free throw line (86.7%).
The Griffons battled foul trouble throughout with Parker and
Ana Oliveira Dias both fouling out in the final quarter. The Griffs were called on 28 total fouls.
MoWest also turned the ball over 20 times, leading to 20 points for LCU. The Chaparrals were 21-of-26 (80.8%) at the free throw line and 11-of-29 (37.9%) from deep.
The Griffons return to Civic Arena in St. Joseph on Friday, November 14 for the DII Central Region Women's Basketball Showcase. MoWest will face Central Region foe Minnesota State-Moorhead that day at 6 p.m.
