No. 23 Griffon Volleyball downs No. 2 Washburn in Five-Set thriller

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — No. 23 MoWest Volleyball completed the season sweep of No. 2 Washburn with a thrilling 3–2 victory (25-21, 19-25, 25-13, 17-25, 15-12) on Friday night inside the MWSU Fieldhouse at Looney Complex.

The Griffons (17-5, 9-2 MIAA) handed the Ichabods (20-2, 9-2 MIAA) their only two losses of the season. After the win tonight, the Griffons extended their win streak to eight straight matches.

MoWest took a tight first set 25-21 before Washburn answered in the second. The Griffons dominated Set 3 with a commanding 25-13 win behind relentless offense and timely blocks.

After the Ichabods pushed the match to a decisive fifth set, MoWest stepped up once again. Holding a 10–7 lead, the Griffons saw Washburn battle back to even the score at 12–12, but MWSU closed strong, rattling off the final three points to secure the 15–12 set and the match victory.

MoWest was led offensively by Taylor Russell, who tallied 12 kills, followed by Emily Loy with 10 and Emma Salker with 9. Katelyn Diani-O'Day paced the offense with 29 assists. Defensively, Anna Weberg anchored the back row with a match-high 31 digs, and Trista Marx dominated at the net with seven total blocks.

The Griffons have now won seven of the last eight contests against the Ichabods since Jessica Fey's first year as head coach in 2022.

After the win over No. 2 Washburn, the race for the MIAA's top overall seed is now a four-way tie with Nebraska Kearney, Washburn, Emporia State, and MoWest all sitting at 9-2 in conference play.
