HOW IT HAPPENED
Western struggled out of the gate, falling behind 21-10 at the end of the first quarter. Hays kept adding to that lead, building a 30-15 advantage before MWSU went on a 6-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Lajahda Boyland, to narrow its deficit to 30-21. Hays responded and expanded its lead, leaving the Griffons trailing 34-21 heading into halftime.
Hays continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 36-21 advantage before Missouri Western State went on an 8-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Clarke, to trim its deficit to 36-29 with 5:40 to go in the third. Hays countered and stretched its lead to 48-37 heading into the fourth. Western played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 16 points in the paint.
The Griffons narrowed their deficit to 57-54 before going on a 7-0 run to seize a 61-57 lead with 2:14 to go in the contest, taking a definite lead with 3:08 to go thanks to back-to-back jumpers by Mackenzie Hart. The Tigers narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Griffons still held on for the 68-66 win.
