MOORHEAD, Minn. - Senior
Alyssa Bonilla's big night helped the Griffons (3-3) snap a three-game losing skid with a 68-57 regional road win over Minnesota State Moorhead (0-4) on Thursday night.
The Griffons outdueled the Dragons in a competitive first quarter and gained control in the second, where they secured the lead and held it for the remainder of the contest. After scoring 21 points in the second, Western headed into the locker room with a commanding 36-23 lead at Nemzek Fieldhouse
MSUM cut the MWSU lead to as little as seven points after finding an offensive rhythm in the third quarter. However, the Griffons responded with consistent offensive production, growing the lead to as many as 17 in the fourth en route to the 11-point victory.
Bonilla led the team with a career-high 21 points, including a trio of three-pointers and dished out seven assists.
Marie Sepp also contributed significantly, scoring 10 points on an efficient 5-of-7 shooting performance. Additionally, both Sepp and
Laura Toffali recorded a team-high six rebounds.
The Griffons scored 24 points off Dragon turnovers and collected 14 from fastbreak opportunities. Additionally, MWSU controlled the paint, outshooting MSUM 28 to 22.
Missouri Western will have its home opener on Tuesday with a non-conference game against former MIAA foe Lincoln. Action is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. at the MWSU Fieldhouse.
