Twelve Griffons Secure All-MIAA Football Recognition

Cody Watson led the way with a unanimous first-team recognition.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The MIAA has announced its All-MIAA football teams for the 2024 season, which includeded a total of 12 Griffons. Placekicker Cody Watson received unanimous first team recognition for a second consecutive season.

Watson connected on 81.3% of his field goal tries during conference play. A native of Yukon, Oklahoma, he led the MIAA with a 53-yard field goal against Northwest Missouri State. Additionally, he made field goals of 52, 49 and 48 yards against league opponents. He finished his career with the most made field goals in a Griffon uniform (42) and tied for the most made point-afters (122).

Watson is also the first Missouri Western kicker since Greg Zuerlein in 2011 to hit multiple 50+-yard field goals in the same season.

Senior receiver Jonas Bennett and senior center James Lucio, along with junior cornerback Desmond Green, were named to the second team. Bennett recorded 817 yards with an average of 90.8 yards per game and scored two touchdowns against MIAA teams. Lucio played a crucial role in anchoring the offensive line, which ranked second in the league with only 14 sacks allowed. Green finished tied for third in league play with three interceptions and also collected four pass breakups.

Four Griffons were named to the third team. Junior DL Grant Finley finished fifth in the conference with five sacks (four solo) and 9.5 tackles for loss, which tied for fourth in the MIAA. Junior LB Kienen Gaskin ranked seventh in the league with 68 tackles (32 solo) and fifth in tackles for loss with 36.

Senior DT Brandon Johnson earned his fourth All-MIAA honor after concluding the season with 28 tackles, two blocked kicks and one sack. Lastly, sophomore punter Spencer Sprenger averaged 40.6 yards per punt against MIAA teams, including 12 punts that were downed inside the 20-yard line.

Corners Javerius McGuinn and Antonio Taylor, along with DL Garrett Watson and OG Braydon Wickliffe received honorable mention recognition.
