EDMOND, Okla. — With Missouri Western previously up 20-0 and suddenly down by four with under five minutes to play, the fate of the game fell in Armani Edden's hands.
Missouri Western then put together a 10-play, 65-yard scoring drive, culminating in a 10-yard touchdown reception by Jonas Bennett from with 1:25 left in the ballgame to seal a 34-31 win over Central Oklahoma on Saturday afternoon at Chad Richison Stadium.
The Griffons improved to 2-1 on the year and 1-1 in the MIAA, while the Bronchos fell to 1-2 and 1-2 in conference play. Edden led Missouri Western's passing attack with 233 yards through the air, tossing one touchdown without throwing an interception.
Brandon Hall led all Griffons rushers with 109 yards in the contest, picking up 9.9 yards per carry. Hall also added 39 receiving yards. Jared Scott also added 35 yards on the ground. Jonas Bennett hauled in nine catches for 96 yards and one score.
Taylor Williams showed out for the Missouri Western defense, recording four tackles, one interception and one forced fumble. Jaden Brown added one interception, and Brandon Johnson had three tackles, one tackle for a loss and one sack in the win. Dakari Streeter added 1.5 sacks, giving at least one sack in each game with four this season and tying his season-high from 2021.
The Griffons won the turnover battle in Saturday's game, forcing two turnovers while avoiding any giveaways, with Missouri Western State turning those takeaways into seven points. Missouri Western converted on 41.7& of third-down attempts on the day. The Griffons also went 1-for-1 on fourth down.
Defensively, Missouri Western held up fairly well against the Central Oklahoma rushing attack, holding the Bronchos to 168 yards on the ground. In part because of that stellar defense, Missouri Western runners out-gained their Central Oklahoma counterparts 182-168.
Missouri Western took care of business in the red zone, scoring five times on five trips inside Central Oklahoma's 20-yard line, picking up touchdowns on four of those trips.
