Griffons fall to Central Missouri in home opener

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Griffon Volleyball fell to Central Missouri in straight sets (19-25, 22-25, 10-25) Thursday at home at the MWSU Fieldhouse inside the Looney Complex.

Holly Heldt finished with seven kills on the day to lead the Griffon offense. Defensively, Missouri Western (6-3, 0-1 MIAA) had two players reach double figures in digs: Anna Weberg had 15, and Nessa Johnson had 12.

SET 1 | The Griffons found themselves in an early hole, losing a tough first set 25-19. Missouri Western trailed by as many as 10 points as Central Missouri (4-4, 1-0 MIAA) never gave up the lead in a set that was knotted up just once before the Jennies took control.

SET 2 | Missouri Western fell in set two 25-22, digging a 2-0 hole in the match. Central Missouri grabbed the advantage for good at 10-9 in a set that was tied up 12 times before Jennies took over the lead.

SET 3 | Central Missouri finished the sweep with a third-set win, scoring 13 straight points after MWSU momentarily tied things up at 1-1. The Griffons fell behind on the first point and fought from behind the rest of the way before falling in the set 25-10.

GAME NOTES

  • Missouri Western got a team-high 15 digs from Weberg.
  • Missouri Western attackers were helped by a team-high 23 assists from Johnson.
  • Johnson recorded her sixth double-double of the season (23 assists, 12 digs).

Missouri Western next plays Missouri Southern (6-2, 0-0 MIAA) on Saturday at 2 p.m. to celebrate Alumni Day at the MWSU Fieldhouse. The Lions will play No. 18 Northwest Missouri State on Friday at 6 p.m.
