ABOUT WEEK TWO
MWSU
Now 1-1 and 0-1 in the MIAA, Missouri Western's 68-14 thumping of Lincoln last Saturday in Jefferson City, Missouri, marks the fifth-largest margin of victory in school history at 54 points. The Griffon Black & Gold Attack was led by Armani Edden's season-high 278 passing yards and two blocked punts on special teams courtesy of sophomore Jake Leader and senior Brayden Wright. Senior running back Jared Scott rushed for a career-high two touchdowns, and senior defensive back Taylor Williams capped his first career interception with a 69-yard pick-6, the first since then-freshman Kameron Langford took back an interception 26 yards for the score against Northeastern State on Oct. 16, 2021. On top of a 37-point second quarter — a season-high in any quarter — the Griffons forced five turnovers, turning those takeaways into 21 points.

UCO
Central Oklahoma (1-1, 1-1 MIAA) took one on the chin vs. Central Missouri last Saturday in Week 2, falling 41-17 in Warrensburg, Missouri. The Mules, who are now receiving Top-25 votes, built a 21-10 lead before senior UCO quarterback Stephon Brown found paydirt from 7 yards out. However, UCM held UCO scoreless in the second half and scored 21 unanswered points to sweeten the deal. Mules QB Zach Zebrowski had himself a day in the pocket, throwing for 400 yards and five touchdowns, hitting 36 of his 55 attempts. Three of those touchdowns found wide receiver Arkell Smith, who was named the MIAA Offensive Player of the Week thanks to nine receptions for 152 yards.

PROLIFIC POSITION PREVIEWS
Coaches

Head Coach Tyler Fenwick is currently 1-1 with MWSU and 54-49 overall. He has only seen the Bronchos once, beating them 45-23 on Sept. 29, 2012, when he was the offensive coordinator at MWSU.

This is Adam Dorrel's second season with UCO. After going 6-5 last season, he is 102-46 as a head coach. Since his head-coaching days at Northwest Missouri State from 2011-16, Dorrel is 5-3 vs. MWSU.

Quarterbacks
Edden and junior Reagan Jones shared snaps again last Saturday, with Edden starting and only playing the first half. Edden completed 14-of-19 passes for 278 yards and two scores, while Jones led two scoring drives, completing 2-of-4 passes for 17 yards and two touchdowns. Edden also completed a season-high 58-yard pass to senior wide receiver Caleb Martin in the second quarter vs. Lincoln. The Griffon offensive line is spotless so far this season, keeping Edden and Jones upright for zero sacks through two games. Edden is the third-most efficient QB in the league with a rating of 176.7.

Stephon Brown of UCO has been relatively consistent through two games, throwing for 170 yards vs. Nebraska Kearney and 190 vs. UCM. To go along with 360 passing yards, Brown has one touchdown and one pick, throwing the TD in Week 1 and the interception last Saturday afternoon. His efficiency rating of 120.2 is ninth in the MIAA, and his completion percentage of 64.9 ranks him fifth among all conference signal callers.

QB STATS VS. OPPONENT
  • MWSU - Reagan Jones: 1-0 starting record | 22-of-31, 71%, 189 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, 1 sack, long pass of 19 yards. Rushing: 14 attempts, 133 yards, 2 TDs, long rush of 33.
  • MWSU - Armani Edden: N/A
  • UCO - Stephon Brown: 1-1 starting record | 26-of-39, 66.7%, 215 yards, 1 TD, 0 INTs, 3 sacks, long pass of 38 yards. Rushing: 24 attempts, 135 yards, 1 TD, long rush of 45.
Defensive Line
In back-to-back weeks, the Griffon pass rush has gotten to the quarterback multiple times, registering five sacks overall, with three vs. UCM and two against Lincoln. Senior Dakari Streeter leads the team and the MIAA with 2.5 sacks this season, putting him on pace to surpass his season-high of four sacks from 2021. Led by senior CJ Ravenell's three tackles behind the line of scrimmage, the Griffons lead the nation with 24 TFLs.

The Bronchos have just one sack this season, belonging to junior Reed Lindsey in last week's loss to UCM. Reed also leads the charge with 1.5 TFLs, as UCO only has seven.

RIVALRY RECORD RABBIT HOLE
By the Numbers

Dating back to 2005 and heading into the 13th matchup, the Griffons lead the series 8-4 and are 3-3 in Edmond. Missouri Western's last win at Chad Richison Stadium was on Oct. 19, 2019, in a 50-43 barn-burner. Missouri Western is 6-4 in the previous 10 matchups, with no team winning consecutive games since the Griffs did so from 2012-13. The Griffons average 32.7 points per game when playing UCO, and the Bronchos average only 23.6 PPG.

Last Time Out
Missouri Western held UCO to a goose egg on the scoreboard at Spratt Stadium last season, beating the Bronchos 35-0 on Sept. 1 in St. Joe. The Griffons opened the season with a shutout for the first time since 1979, putting up 14 points in the first and fourth quarters. Then-sophomore running back Brandon Hall had a brilliant night, rushing for a career-high 141 yards on another career-high 30 attempts. Reagan Jones added 117 yards and two touchdowns as well, earning MIAA Offensive Player of the Week honors the following Monday. Stephon Brown only threw for 26 yards on 9-of-12 passing, chipping in just nine yards on the ground after taking three sacks.

ACROSS THE NATION
While the Griffon defense leads the MIAA and the country with 24 TFLs, the offensive is doing its part and then some. Through two games, MWSU is averaging 53 PPG, the most in the conference and the sixth-best value in Division II.

BERREY BOMB
Junior wide receiver Jake Berrey caught his first TD as a Griffon vs. Lincoln, hauling in a 23-yard pass from Edden in the second quarter for his first catch of the season. This is the fifth score of Berrey's collegiate career, as he caught four TDs with East Central from 2021-22.

BLOCK PARTY
With two blocked punts vs. Lincoln, the Griffons have blocked three kicks on special teams overall. Sophomore D-lineman Grant Finley blocked a field goal vs. UCM on August 31, resulting in a 76-yard scoop-and-score by Braden Wright. Thanks to Wright's block that turned into a safety last weekend, the Griffons have scored eight points on special teams outside of any junior Cody Watson field goals and PATs.

MILE-LONG MARGIN
Saturday's 54-point win at Lincoln is the fifth-largest margin of victory in Griffon Football history.

ON THIS DAY IN GRIFFON FOOTBALL HISTORY
Sept. 16 | Box Score
Speaking of extraordinary victories, the Griffons recorded their second-largest win in school history with a 63-0 undoing of Missouri Rolla (now Missouri S&T) back in 2000. The Griffs had standout performances across the board, with Hall of Fame QB Kasey Waterman throwing for 194 yards and three touchdowns. Brandon Perry toted the rock just 10 times for 153 yards and one touchdown, and Hall of Famer Jerris Evans — the team's all-time leading receiver — boosted his numbers with eight catches for 115 yards and two scores of his own.
