No. 37 Griffons leap past No. 40 Lopers on Senior Day

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Missouri Western Tennis took down No. 40 Nebraska Kearney on Senior Day this Saturday, winning 6-1 at Noyes Tennis Courts to celebrate seniors Ariella Curci, Kim Le and Nicole Donnelly.

The Griffons (12-4, 4-2 MIAA)  used extra sets in three matches to win five of the six singles points and two of the three doubles matches to claim the point over the Lopers (12-10, 3-4 MIAA). Included in the win was yet another perfect 6-0, 6-0 match, this time by Anais Peralta Criado, marking the second time in two matches the Griffons have found a perfect game. 

DOUBLES
Donnelly and Anya Chavez fell in the No. 1 doubles match to Narindra Rannaivo and Melisa Becerra 6-0. Isabella MacGibbon and  Peralta Criado snagged the No. 2 doubles win over Jazmin Zamorano and Olivia Flood 6-1, and Ariella Curci and Lucia Casas Blas won the No. 3 doubles match over Mariya Hatouka and Alexis Bernthal 6-4. 

SINGLES
MacGibbon battled Becerra in a tightly-contested No. 1 singles match, winning 7-5, 0-6, 10-8. Chavez beat Zamorano in yet another tight-singles showdown in the No. 2 match, winning 7-6, 3-6, 10-4. Cristina Granero Boj fell to Ranaivo in the No. 3 match 6-4, 6-2, and Casas Blas beat Bernthal in the No. 4 singles match 3-6, 6-0, 6-1. 

The final two singles matches went the Griffons' way thanks to Peralta Criado's perfect showing. She won the No. 5 singles match 6-0, 6-0 over Flood, and Donnelly beat Hatouka in the No. 6 singles match 6-3, 6-0. 

NOTABLES
  • Currently ranked No. 37 in Division II, MWSU is 4-2 vs. ranked opponents this season.
  • This win marks the third victory over UNK since 2013.
  • Saturday's match was the third time the Griffons played at Noyes Tennis Courts this season.
  • Finishing at 9-0, this is the first time MWSU has gone undefeated at home in over 10 years.

The Griffons take on No. 19 Northwest Missouri State (16-3, 7-0 MIAA) in the final match of the regular season this upcoming Wednesday. The match is set for 2 p.m. at Frank Grube Courts in Maryville, Missouri.
