ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Facing Maryville for a second time this season in their toughest matchup yet, Griffon Lacrosse fell to the No. 14-ranked Saints 25-15 on Friday at Spratt Stadium.
The Griffons struck first in the first early on, taking a 1-0 lead thanks to a
Mikaela Ness goal just under two minutes in. However, a Sydney Tiemann goal minutes later kickstarted a 4-0 run for Maryville (14-1, 3-1 GLVC), helping the Saints outscore MWSU 6-2 in the first quarter. Now 10-4 in the second, a pair of back-to-back scores by
Jordan Coulon and
Karlin York in the span of less than a minute brought MWSU within four points.
Continuing her scoring ways, Tiemann tallied four goals in the second period, scoring two more in the final minutes to give Maryville a 16-8 lead at halftime. Thanks to a
Caetryn Gilreath goal to start the third, MWSU kept pace with Maryville throughout the third, as the Saints won the quarter 6-5. Despite the Griffons' efforts, Tiemann went off for four goals again, giving the Saints a 22-13 lead heading into the final period.
Tiemann only scored two goals in the fourth, giving her 11 for the day.
Sam Pruitt finished her day by scoring her own hat trick with 21 seconds left to play, ending the scoring at 25-15 in favor of Maryville.
