Armstrong, Hawkins, Pruetting homer in split vs. Newman

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Missouri Western Softball split a doubleheader with Newman, dominating in the first game before falling in heartbreaking fashion in game two at the Spring Sports Complex.

GAME ONE
Missouri Western 11, Newman 1 (5 innings)

The first game saw the Griffons (20-7, 3-3 MIAA) use a big fourth inning to win in five innings over the Jets 11-1. Harley Pruetting got the win in game one, striking out three batters and only allowing two hits while hitting a solo home run to help her own cause. Sydni Hawkins and Chloe Armstrong both found three RBI to lead the Griffons, homering in the early stages of the game to help build a 4-0 lead for MWSU.

Seven different Griffons tallied an RBI, and eight finished with a hit. Ten total Griffons scored a run in the win. 

GAME TWO
Newman 8, Missouri Western 7 (nine innings)

The Griffons got off to a hot start, leading 7-0 after just two innings. Abby Dickey, Kennedy Preston and Jada Collins all finished with two RBI to lead the Griffons, and Kalee Higdon added another RBI for the Griffons. Preston and Dickey both finished with extra base hits as well in the loss.

Newman (10-18, 1-3 MIAA) put five runs on the board in the third before eventually tying the game at 7-7 with two more in the sixth. A late RBI single from Jale Conkle in the ninth proved to be the deciding factor.

Sam Pederson and Pruetting both struck out three hitters. Pruetting finished with the loss despite only giving up one run. Pruetting also recorded a hit as a pinch hitter before taking to the circle. 

NOTABLES
  • Dickey hit her second triple of the season.
  • All but two Griffons who had an at0bat recorded a hit in the first game.
  • Pruetting is the first Griffon pitcher to reach 10 wins on the season. She also hit her fourth home run of the season.
  • Hawkins went deep for the first time this season in game one.

The Griffons take on No. 5 Central Oklahoma (22-3, 6-0 MIAA) at the Spring Sports Complex on Saturday. First pitch of game one is at 12 p.m., and first pitch of game two is at 2.
