Late triple hurts Griffons vs. Washburn

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Despite taking an early lead, Griffon Baseball fell to Washburn 4-3 to open a three-game series on Friday afternoon at the Spring Sports Complex.

Ryan Neise gave Missouri Western (5-19, 2-12 MIAA) a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second with an RBI single up the middle, scoring Bryson McArn. Washburn (18-10, 11-3 MIAA) answered in the fifth when Cal Watkins sent an RBI single to right. The Ichabods did most of their damage in the sixth, as Trevor McCollum gave his team a 2-1 lead with an RBI base knock to right field.

Washburn added insurance in the same inning with a two-run triple by Ike Book, giving the Ichabods a 4-1 lead. Will Courtney doubled to center field and brought home Brenden Andersen in the eighth, cutting the deficit in half. Jerry Nix made it a 4-3 game in the ninth with a sacrifice fly to score Halen David, but the Griffons stranded a runner on base to end the game.
