ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Two offense-heavy games ended in run-rule fashion on Monday, both falling in favor of Griffon Softball in a doubleheader with Upper Iowa at the Spring Sports Complex.
GAME 1
Missouri Western 10, Upper Iowa 2 (six innings)
The Peacocks struck first in their visit to St. Joseph with an RBI single by Kylie Doty in the top of the first.
Chloe Armstrong responded by forcing an error at third base, allowing
Sydni Hawkins to score and tie the game. Some small ball helped the Griffons tack on runs and take a 7-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. During the fifth inning,
Abby Dickey got a hold of her first collegiate home run to make it an 8-2 ballgame.
Jada Collins put this one to bed early with a double, plating
Liz Vaupel and
Rian Gere.
Pederson went the entire game, only giving up four hits while striking out six Peacocks to start the day.
GAME 2
Missouri Western 11, Upper Iowa 0 (five innings)
The Griffons matched their largest win over an opponent this season in a hitter's clinic for the second game. Pitcher
Harley Pruetting continued the Griffons' offensive showcase in game two with a first-inning single to bring in Hawkins. After scoring at least once in each of the first three innings, MWSU swarmed Upper Iowa (7-9) with a seven-run fourth inning, highlighted by a
Kalee Higdon RBI double and a two-RBI single courtesy of Hawkins.
Pruetting went all five in this shortened game, allowing only one hit with seven strikeouts to boot. She nearly threw an abbreviated perfect game thanks to clean sheet by the Griffon defense.
