Griffon Women snag 14 steals in win over Rogers State

CLAREMORE, Okla. — Missouri Western Women's Basketball used a strong third quarter to pull away from Rogers State on Saturday, coming away with the 68-53 win at the Claremore Expo Center.

The Griffons were led by Brionna Budgetts' game-high 23 points, while Connie Clarke scored 15 points and collected six rebounds. Abby Bala scored 12 points from the bench and added five assists, while Alyssa Bonilla scored seven points and dished out seven rebounds. 

Bailey Kliewer led Rogers State with 15 points, and Kaya Goldsby added nine for the Hillcats. Jordan Lewis had eight points off the bench for RSU. 

Kliewer knocked down the first bucket of the game, a deep 3-pointer to give Rogers the early lead. Rogers stretched the lead all the way up to 9-2 before a quick 8-0 run from the Griffons help MWSU regain the lead. The Griffons pushed the lead to 15-10 to end the first quarter. 

The Griffons looked as if they were going to run away with the game in the second quarter, pushing the lead to 10 points right after the halfway point of the quarter, but Rogers wouldn't go away. A pair of free throws with 35 seconds left cut the Griffon lead to just four points, and the half ended with MWSU up, 30-26.

Missouri Western woke up in the third quarter, pushing the lead to new heights. The Griffons pushed the score up to 50-32 at the three-minute mark of the quarter. Rogers scored a handful of points to end the quarter, and the Griffons went into the fourth up, 50-36.

Rogers played well in the fourth quarter, keeping the score level. The Griffons pushed the lead up to 60-39, but RSU came back into the game. The game finished with rapid-fire scoring from both teams, but the Griffons came out on top, 68-53.

NOTABLES
  • The Griffons continued to show their prowess in points off turnovers, winning that battle, 27-12.
  • MWSU dominated the transition game, scoring 28 points on the fast break to Rogers' three points.
  • Only six Griffons scored, with three scoring in double-figures. 
UP NEXT
The Griffons come home to face Northwest Missouri State (13-11, 8-10 MIAA) next Saturday. The Bearcats beat Northeastern State on Thursday, 68-46. Tipoff is set for 1:30 p.m. at the MWSU Fieldhouse.
