Heldt's double-double leads Griffons to fifth-straight win

HAYS, Kan. Griffon Volleyball knocked off the Fort Hays State Tigers in four sets (27-25, 25-19, 21-25, 25-15) Thursday on the road at Gross Memorial Coliseum.

The Griffons (12-4, 5-2 MIAA) were led by a double-double from Holly Heldt, who registered 14 kills and 17 digs on the day. Danielle Moje also added 13 kills to help the attack. On the defensive end, Anna Weberg chipped in for with 17 digs to go with five blocks from Lily Kurz

SET 1 | The Griffons came out on top of a tight first set, winning 27-25 in a stanza that was tied seven times and had two lead changes.

SET 2 | After their win in the first set, Missouri Western put itself on the cusp of a sweep with a 25-19 victory in set number two. The Griffons never trailed by more than five points and grabbed the advantage for good at 14-13 in a set that showcased three lead changes before Missouri Western took over in the second half of the stanza.

SET 3 | Missouri Western saw its chance at a 3-0 sweep end when Fort Hays took the third set. The Griffons came up short by the score of 25-21. Fort Hays (7-9, 1-6 MIAA) grabbed the advantage for good at 21-20 in a set that was tied up six times before the Tigers took over in the second half of the stanza.

SET 4 | Missouri Western then responded to close out the match with a 25-15 fourth-set victory. The Griffons grabbed control of the set at 3-2 and never looked back. Missouri Western ended the stanza on a high note by opening up its biggest lead, 10 points, to finish off the set.

GAME NOTES

  • Missouri Western had four players in double figures in kills and digs.
  • Kurz had a team-high two aces in the win.
  • Missouri Western attackers were helped by a match-high 45 assists from Nessa Johnson.
  • This is Heldt's sixth double-double of the season and her career.
  • With 12 wins this season, MWSU has surpassed its win total from 2022.
