Griffons run rampant in 44-0 shutout of Northeastern State

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — To celebrate Griffon Athletics' Hall of Fame weekend, five different players reached the end zone, led by two scores from Jared Scott, as Missouri Western State Football easily defeated Northeastern State 44-0 on Saturday afternoon at Spratt Stadium.

The Griffons improved to 7-2 on the year and 6-2 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play, while the RiverHawks fell to 1-8 and 0-8.

Missouri Western got on the scoreboard first and took a 7-0 lead with 7:20 left in the first quarter thanks to a 3-yard touchdown pass from Reagan Jones to Garrett Watson. The Griffons then followed with another score thanks to Armani Edden's 19-yard TD pass to Jonas Bennett, expanding the lead to 14-0.

The Griffons continued to build its advantage, scoring again with 14:13 remaining in the second quarter to go up 21-0 after a 3-yard touchdown run by Seth Cromwell. The Griffons continued to increase their lead, scoring again to go on top 28-0 after a 1-yard run by Jared Scott.

Missouri Western continued to expand its lead, scoring again on Edden's 20-yard strike to Tyler Carey with 1:10 left in the second quarter to go up 34-0.The Griffons kept scoring, tacking on a 37-yard touchdown scamper by Scott to extend their advantage to 41-0.

Missouri Western held the RiverHawks off the board before scoring for a final time with 1:32 left in the third quarter, extending its lead to 44-0 thanks to a 28-yard field goal by Cody Watson.

Edden led Missouri Western's passing attack with 154 yards through the air, tossing two touchdowns and one interception.

Brandon Hall led all Griffons rushers with 89 yards in the contest, picking up 8.1 yards per carry. Scott also added 74 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, averaging 12.3 yards per carry. Jayden Williams chipped in with 55 yards as well, averaging 6.9 yards per carry.

Bennett pulled in four catches for 86 yards and one score. Tyler Carey made his presence felt in the passing game, recording six receptions for 69 yards and one touchdown.

Offensively, Missouri Western had an outstanding day, racking up 534 total yards, 282 on the ground and 252 through the air, while averaging 8.1 yards per play and out-gaining Northeastern.

Defensively, Missouri Western did an impressive job neutralizing the Northeastern offensive attack, holding the RiverHawks to 112 total yards. The Griffons kept Northeastern State under 100 yards on both the ground and through the air, allowing only 60 passing and 52 rushing yards.
