Griffons drop sweep to Central Missouri

WARRENSBURG, Mo.  Missouri Western State Volleyball fell to the Central Missouri Jennies in straight sets (18-25, 13-25, 22-25) Tuesday on the road at the UCM Multipurpose Building.

Holly Heldt finished with 10 kills on the day to lead the Missouri Western offense. The Griffons (14-7, 7-5 MIAA) got 15 digs from Anna Weberg to lead them defensively. The Jennies improved to 13-7 and 10-2 in the MIAA.

SET 1 | The Griffons found themselves in an early deficit, dropping a tough first set 25-18. Missouri Western trailed by as many as seven points as Central Missouri grabbed the advantage for good at 14-13 in a set that was knotted up six times before the Jennies took over in the second half of the stanza.

SET 2 | Missouri Western dropped the second set 25-13, digging a 2-0 deficit in the match. Missouri Western trailed by as many as 12 points as Central Missouri grabbed the advantage for good at 2-1 in a set that was tied up just once before the Mules & Jennies took over the lead.

SET 3 | Central Missouri finished the sweep with a third-set win. The Griffons fell in a back-and-forth battle, losing 25-22 in a set that featured two lead changes and was tied nine times. Neither team had a lead of more than three points along the way.

GAME NOTES

  • Heldt had a team-high one ace in the loss.
  • Missouri Western attackers were helped by a team-high 32 assists from Nessa Johnson.
  • Lily Kurz led the Griffons with two blocks.

The Griffons take on Newman (0-19, 0-11 MIAA) this Saturday at 3 p.m. in Wichita, Kansas. The Jets lost 3-0 to Emporia State on Tuesday at home.
