ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Ioanna Lathouri and
Esther Güemes celebrated their final match at Genesis Health Club as Griffons on Tuesday, but the Ichabods ended up celebrating a 5-2 upset victory that keeps them undefeated in the MIAA.
The Griffons (13-4, 4-2 MIAA) lost two-of-three in doubles play, only notching one win with the No. 3 team of Lathouri and
Anaís Peralta Criado. They beat Marta Torres and Svea Crohn, 6-3. The No. 38-ranked doubles team of Isabella Martensson and Lara Schmid beat
Anya Chavez and
Isabella MacGibbon in No. 1 doubles, 6-4, handing the Griffon pair their second loss in the last week after a five-match winning streak ended on Saturday vs. Central Oklahoma.
With the Griffons down 3-2, Lathouri's No. 5 singles match vs. Lara Schmid determined whether her team would stay alive or if the Ichabods (10-9, 4-0 MIAA) would clench the contest. Lathouri lost the opening set, 6-3, but she battled back in the second to force a 5-5 tie. Unfortunately for Lathouri, Schmid found a surplus of momentum to take the next two games and win the match for herself and Washburn.
