Pitt State Powers by Griffon Baseball for Series Sweep

PITTSBURG, Ks. — Missouri Western's Saturday doubleheader began with power and promise but went south soon after.

Game 1

For the second-straight game, Griffon Baseball bashed three home runs but falls to the Gorillas 10-4. Brady Holden, Chaz Verduzco and Hunter Olson all smashed solo shots early to help build MWSU a 3-1 lead after three. Pitt State peppered MWSU right back with three runs in the fifth and four more in sixth to take a definite lead.

Zack Cushing took the loss but pitched four innings of eight-strikeout baseball. Pittsburg State's Peyton Ingalls struck out five in seven innings of work. His offense backed him up with 13 hits for the first meeting

Game 2

Pitt State's bats went berserk in the second of Saturday's doubleheader, beating MWSU 16-5. The Gorillas homered five times and were up as much as 8-1. The Griffons showed power of their own, going yard three times for the third time this series courtesy of Brenden Andersen, Will Courtney and Holden again. 

Pitcher Jordan Akins took his first loss of the season with a 2 ⅔ outing, striking out three and giving up seven earned runs. Trey Asher made his season debut in the bottom of the eighth, where he gave up one hit and struck out two batters.

Next Up

With this three-game sweep by PSU (10-7, 5-1 MIAA), MWSU (3-12, 1-5 MIAA) welcomes Minnesota-Duluth (3-1) for a Wednesday meeting at 3 p.m. at the Spring Sports Complex in St. Joseph, Missouri. The Bulldogs come in on a three-game winning streak, scoring 28 runs in their last two games.
