Griffon Women's Cinderella Story Comes to a Close in Elite Eight

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — An NCAA Championships run that saw Griffon Women's Basketball topple two top-25 teams in the country ends in the Elite Eight.

A three minute and 30-second-scoring drought for No. 7 seed Missouri Western late in the third quarter helped No. 6-ranked and No. 2 seed Grand Valley State seal their eventual 67-44 win on Monday at Bill Harris Arena. Down 39-28 just moments before this dry spell, two free throws from Jaelyn Haggard brought the game within single-digits for the first time since it was 32-23 earlier with in the second quarter.

Enter a 12-0 Lakers run. Down by 21, MWSU was facing their largest deficit of the day to that point. Grand Valley State slid into cruise control for the rest of the game while Missouri Western found problems creating a run of their, scoring just 10 points in the fourth quarter. Corbyn Cunningham led MWSU with 16 points, but 11 combined turnovers and points from Brionna Budgetts and Connie Clark cooled off an offense that was averaging 84 points per game in the postseason.

The Griffons — who made 15 3-pointers in the first round of the Central Regional — were cold from beyond the arc. They shot 2-of-14 from downtown with those makes courtesy of Haggard and Budgetts.

Four Lakers scored in double-digits with Emily Spitzley leading the charge with 20. Grand Valley State improves to 31-2 and will face No. 3 seed Glenville State in Final Four on Wednesday.

Cunningham, Haggard and Mychaell Gray end their time as Griffons a part of one the top-eight teams left standing in Division II. After winning just six games last season, Missouri Western ends their season at 24-10 but matches their best finish in program history.
