WICHITA, Ks. — Tied at 10-10 in the bottom of the eighth against Newman, who better to takeover the game than one of the MIAA's leading home-run hitters?
With nobody on and nothing to rely on but his own long-ball reputation,
Alex Crouch crushed his seventh homer of 2022 over right-center field for the go-ahead run to give Missouri Western the eventual 11-10 win over the Jets. Sunday's win over Newman (13-8, 3-5 MIAA) breaks a five-game losing streak for MWSU (4-13, 2-6, MIAA) and ties the series at 1-1. Despite six errors in the game, the Griffons kept pace with the Jets with at least one team scoring in every inning but the fourth and ninth.
In a game with four ties and seven lead changes combined, the Griffons played keep away with the lead early on and often. Trailing 9-6 in the top of the seventh, the Jets jumped on reliever
Brian Tan for four hits and four runs after he took over for starting pitcher
Jared Slater. Newman capped the inning off with a three-run bomb to take a 10-9 lead.
While Crouch's homer gave MWSU the lead and places him fourth in the MIAA, it wouldn't have meant as much without
Caden Kohout scoring the tying run after
Bryson McArn grounded out to second base.
Hunter Rumachik and
Will Courtney also went yard for both of their second deep shots of the season. This is Missouri Western's second-straight game with exactly 14 hits, seven of which belonging to the first four in the lineup:
Brady Holden (2-for-4);
Jared Munk (2-for-5); Crouch (1-for-5); and
Brenden Andersen (3-for-3).
Slater chewed up six innings of work and struck out five. Tan struck out two of his own while going one inning.
Robert Farrell found the win by pitching the the final two innings and fanning two batters to match, earning him a 1-1 mark on the mound.
