ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Tuesday's tale of two similar games with two different outcomes for Griffon Softball saw them split their opening-day doubleheader against Northern State at the Spring Sports Complex.
Game 1
Missouri Western dropped game one 9-2 after back-to-back big innings from NSU. The Griffons (4-8) were already up after a second-inning-two-run blast from Emma Hoffart, her second of the season. The Wolves (6-8) went to work in with five runs scored in the fourth and followed that up with three more runs in the fifth.
Pitcher Natalie Kissinger only went one inning and gave up a single run on two hits and two walks. Sydney Rader in relief struck out four but gave up seven earned runs. However, both pitcher's found redemption in the second dose of the Griffons' doubleheader.
Game 2
Once again, NSU took an early lead vs. MWSU, but the Griffons shifted into fifth gear immediately to strike back. Rachel Stewart started the scoring with an RBI single to push across Sydni Hawkins. Soon after that, Taylor Hoelscher doubled to left to score Hoffart and Stewart, putting Missouri Western up 3-1.
The Griffons never looked back and neither did Kissinger. She quickly forgot her first outing while pitching 3.2 innings with no runs given up. Rader came in for the seventh and all retired the Wolves in order. Meanwhile, Hawkins, Hoelscher and Si Culver all recorded two hits in game two, with Hawkins scoring twice as well.
Tuesday marked Ashley Schilling's return to St. Joseph with a different view from the opposing dugout. The first-year Northern State head coach spent the last three seasons as an assistant coach for the Griffons.
