WBB Primer: Griffons head to Courtyard Sioux Falls Tip-Off Classic

SIOUX FALLS, S.D — Griffon Women's Basketball makes the trip to Sioux Falls to take on University of Sioux Falls and Augustana in the Courtyard Sioux Falls Tip-Off Classic this weekend at the Stewart Center.

SCOUTING SIOUX FALLS
The Cougars tip-off their season against the Griffons. Last season saw the Cougars go 16-12, finishing 11-9 in NSIC play. Freshman Megan Fannin led USF with 12.9 Points per game. The Cougars started three freshmen for the majority of the season, and will return all five starters from last season, along with seven of the top ten minutes played.

Sioux Falls is led by Head Coach Travis Traphagen, who's 251-123 record has resulted in two trips the NCAA Tournament in the last ten years. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Friday.

Last time vs. Sioux Falls
Missouri Western (1-1) has played Sioux Falls only once prior. The Cougars came to the MWSU Fieldhouse last season on Nov. 12, and the Griffons came away victorious, 76-68. That matchup was the first of the season, starting the Griffons on a 9-0 run to begin 2021-22. Corbyn Cunningham led the Griffons with 24 points. Jaelyn Haggard finished right behind her, scoring 23 points while shooting 5-of-9 from three. 

The Griffons return four of the five starters from that game: Connie Clarke, Jordan Cunningham, Brionna Budgetts and Camille Evans

SCOUTING AUGUSTANA
The Vikings are led by a pair of returning players, Lauren Sees and Aislinn Duffy, who averaged a combined 30.4 points per game. Three of the top six minutes played return for Augustana, as well as three of the top four scorers.

Augustana is led by head coach Dave Krauth, who is starting his 34th season with the Vikings. He has never had a losing record with the program. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Last time vs. Augustana
It's been a while since the Griffons took on the Vikings of Augustana, with the last matchup coming in 2008. Missouri Western is 1-1 against Augustana, with both teams winning at home. 

THIS WEEKEND IN GRIFFON WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: NOV. 10
In 2014, the Griffons got in the record book for all the right reasons at MWSU Fieldhouse. Missouri Western beat Avila, 104-50, on Nov. 12. The 104 points was, at the time, tied for the second-most points in Griffon Women's history. It now is tied for the seventh-most points ever scored. An astounding 13 Griffons scored, with five reaching double-digits.
