ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Missouri Western beat the Bulldogs of Truman State to cap Wednesday's home opener, 81-72, on the backs of two big nights from
Brionna Budgetts and
Mary Fultz at the MWSU Fieldhouse
The Griffons (3-2) were led by Budgetts in scoring, as she followed up her sensational 33-point performance vs. Augustana with 26 points on Wednesday evening. Fultz, who came off the bench, was second in scoring with 14 points. Fultz also added a career-high seven assists to lead the team.
A shaky start to the game led to the Griffons being down by two points at the first-quarter break, 21-19. Truman (1-2) jumped out to an 11-4 lead at the 6:43 mark, but the Griffons battled back to get the score within two points before the period ended.
The second quarter was much improved defensively for Missouri Western, holding the Bulldogs to just 12 points. No Griffon scored more than four points in the second quarter, but five different Griffons got in the scoring column and MWSU took a narrow 34-33 lead into the halftime break.
Truman came back to take the lead in the third quarter behind eight points from Hannah Belanger. There were five lead changes in the third quarter, but Truman closed the quarter out leading 55-54 after a
Connie Clarke layup was waived off for being just after the buzzer.
Missouri Western hit the accelerator in the fourth quarter behind Budgetts' 12 points. The Griffons took the lead less than 30 second into the fourth quarter off a Budgetts 3-pointer and never looked back, winning the quarter, 27-17, and the game, 81-72.
