WICHITA, Ks. –– Griffon Volleyball took down the Jets of Newman on Saturday, 3-1, moving the Griffons to within touching distance of the MIAA tournament.
The Griffons (9-17, 6-12 MIAA) were lead by
Danielle Moje, who finished with 15 kills. Kathrine White was right behind her, finishing with 14 kills.
Nessa Johnson finished with 28 assists and 16 digs, both team-highs, marking her third double-double of the season.
The Jets (8-20, 3-15 MIAA) gave MWSU all they could handle through the first two sets, playing the Griffons close in the first set and winning the second, before the Griffons pulled away in the last two set.
CONFERENCE PLAYOFF RACE HEATING UP
Missouri Western now has breathing room over Fort Hays State (10-16, 5-13 MIAA) in the race to Civic Arena and the MIAA playoffs. Both teams have two games remaining.
The Griffons finish the year at home and need to match the Tigers in results to qualify for the tournament.
SET ONE (25-19 MWSU)
The Griffons jumped out to a 17-7 lead, but a Jets comeback fell just short. The Griffons would finally take the set and a 1-0 lead.
SET TWO (25-23 NEWMAN)
Both teams battled back and forth, with neither team pulling away from the other. The Jets used a late five-point run to finish off the set and tie the match.
SET THREE (25-18 MWSU)
Both teams battled back and forth before the Griffons pulled away and found a 20-12 lead. The Jets looked ot start a run, but fell short and the Griffons took a 2-1 lead.
SET FOUR (25-18 MWSU)
The Griffons scored five of the first seven points of the set and never really looked back. Newman was able to keep pace with the MWSU but couldn't ever close the gap, as the Griffons won the set and the match.
